Red Cross Otago launched a free community transport service yesterday, which will cover the Dunedin urban area, including Mosgiel, from Monday.
Area manager Karen Clements was "over the moon" to get the service running, after two years of planning.
Similar services were operated by different organisations in the city, but there was nothing which "targeted the general public", she said.
Research revealed a "definite need" for the transport service.
Many people were affected by a lack of family support, bus schedule times, or no money for taxis.
However, with help from the Otago Community Trust, Ford, and Lodge St Patrick, a 12-seater van and a team of 14 trained volunteers were ready to help.
The service will target the elderly primarily, but will provide transport for anyone referred by their health provider, Ms Clements said.
