Dairy worker killed on road near Mossburn

A 27-year-old man died when he was hit by a car on State Highway 94, near the Dipton-Castlerock Rd intersection, yesterday morning.

His was one of five traffic deaths in New Zealand at the weekend.

Acting Senior Sergeant Wing-wah Ng, of Invercargill, said the man died at the scene after being hit by a Mitsubishi vehicle at 7.25am.

The Otago Daily Times understands the man was a Filipino dairy worker.

The man and his friend had left a Lumsden house sometime after 4.30am, intending to walk to their home near Mossburn.

Police are appealing for information from anyone who saw the two men, either together or separately, walking north along State Highway 96 between Lumsden and the State Highway turnoff, or west along State Highway 94.

Acting Snr Sgt Ng said police wanted to speak to the occupants of a 4WD who took the dead man's friend to the crash scene.

A nearby resident, who asked not to be named, said the man had recently moved to the area and lived close to where he was killed.

"It's quite sad really ... He's a young fella. He hasn't been here long.

"From all accounts he's been in the district two months."
