English premiership club Arsenal is rumoured to be among the suitors for All Whites defender Winston Reid, one of the standout New Zealand players at the World Cup.

After New Zealand bowed out of the World Cup with a 0-0 draw against Paraguay this morning, talk turned to which All Whites would be targeted by big-spending clubs.

Reid, 20, was the New Zealand find of the tournament, and sources in South Africa told NZPA he had attracted the interest of scouts working for Arsenal.

Reid scored with a header against Slovakia in the All Whites' tournament opener, and proved an agile and athletic right back working alongside the vastly experienced New Zealand captain Ryan Nelsen.

NZPA calls to his agents Euro Connections ApS in Denmark today were not answered, though it is known Arsenal are desperate to shore up their ranks after a host of defenders left the club in the off-season.

French centre-back William Gallas is tipped to join Juventus, Swiss defender Philippe Senderos has moved to London rivals Fulham, former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre is poised to move to Abu Dhabi and the future of 35-year-old Sol Campbell is unclear.

The club is reportedly chasing Laurent Koscielny from French club Lorient and Phil Jagielka from Premiership rivals Everton.

Reid, who plays for FC Midtjylland in the Danish Superliga, is reported to be on the list of several clubs in Italy's Serie A and the English Premier League, with his age and his transfer price attractions.

He is listed as having a market value of Stg1.125 million ($NZ2.5m).

Reid has also been widely linked with a move to Sicilian club Palermo but has not had discussions with the club.

"I haven't spoken with Palermo and my agent hasn't told me anything," he explained to palermo24.net.

"Palermo is a big club in Italy and my friend [Simon Kjaer] plays there. I would like it there, but there's been no contact."

Kjaer and Reid were team-mates at Midtjylland and the Danish defender has prospered since moving to Serie A in 2008.

Reid told NZPA after today's game he was not sure whether club commitments would get in the way of international football.

"I want to represent New Zealand and help New Zealand out," he said.

"I'm coming back to play for New Zealand Football. My idea is that I am going to play for New Zealand as much as possible.

"I have to go back and talk to the club, hopefully I can go on. I don't think anything will happen until after the World Cup is finished. I will see what happens."

Reid, skipper Ryan Nelsen and goalkeeper Mark Paston were rated the standout All Whites in South Africa.

Nelsen is signed to English premiership side Blackburn Rovers until mid-2012, while Paston has a year left on his Wellington Phoenix contract.

After his World Cup goalstopping feats, he may now be prompted to reconsider his long-term plans, said to involve carving out a career away from football.

Coach Ricki Herbert seemed to think his goalkeeper now had a big future.

"Paston has had a fantastic World Cup, who knows what might happen with him now?" Herbert said.

Sharp shooting striker Shane Smeltz is another eyeing new opportunities. He played with Australian club Gold Coast United last season, but carries a German passport which could open doors in Europe.

He today hinted at playing further afield than the A league.

"At the end of the day I know a couple of things I can't say right now, I just have to wait and see if they develop properly."

Until then, his family was foremost to his thoughts.

"I'm dying to see my kids. Obviously take a little bit of a break. It's been a hard six weeks. I think it is important to take a little bit of a break before you get going again."
