Avant-garde pop experimentalist group the Phoenix Foundation brings tunes from its critically acclaimed new album Buffalo to Queenstown tomorrow night.

The Foundation's fourth studio album made an instant impact, shooting straight to No 4 on the Radioscope New Zealand chart.

The title track single topped the Alternative Chart for two consecutive weeks and has been in the top five for seven consecutive weeks.

Vocalist-guitarist Sam Scott told the Queenstown Times the band members loved coming to the resort.

"[We] Did a great show there last year and can't wait to get back. The crowds always seem to enjoy the music which makes performing there a treat."

The psychedelic six-piece launched its eight-show album tour on the Mainland this week. It plays in Takaka, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin and Queenstown's Revolver before heading to Auckland's Powerstation, on May 21, then Wellington's San Francisco Bathhouse on May 27 and 28.

Revolver co-owner John Stapleton said the Foundation had a "uniquely Wellington" sound.

"They've definitely got a different style of music; it's like a journey through musical genres."

• The Phoenix Foundation, Revolver, Saturday, May 8, doors 9pm. Advanced tickets $20 (plus booking fee) from Event Finder and Quest stores, or $25 on the door. R18.
