We are thrilled to be able to host our 35th annual art exhibition this coming Labour Weekend, 2016. The exhibition will feature the work of two special guest artists - Samuel Earp from Queenstown and Danny Moorwood from Dunedin.
Samuel is a young, and highly talented international landscape and seascape artist, who was born on the Island of Guernsey and grew up in the South West of England. He has been living in NZ since 2009. Samuel has always loved painting pictures of water and the sea. When he paints he likes to reproduce the organic colours that he observes in nature. He is fascinated by the combination of light, shadow and colour; and how to use this to best effect to capture the feel of the breaking waves and heavy swells, the drama and atmosphere of nature.
Danny is a very accomplished NZ potter who has worked and exhibited widely in NZ and overseas. He first began making pots in the 1970's when he was living in Auckland. In 1978 he shifted to Central Otago before spending some time in Melbourne, immersing himself in the Melbourne Art and Craft scene, before finally relocating to Dunedin to settle in 1988.
Danny runs his own studio and gallery. For the past few years Danny has been hugely interested in lustre glazes, exploring how to create different surface textures and colours through the process of multi firing. Many of his pieces are fired 6 times to achieve their end effect. While Danny is also interested in other styles of work, his priority is to produce good form with simple but effective decoration.
As well as the work of numerous other artists from Fiordland and wider Southland, we have opened the exhibition to the under 20-year-old artists. The theme for the Youth exhibition being “What if…?” The Society is very interested to see what kind of innovative and creative art these young artists will have on show.
There have been a number of adult students participating in painting and photography tutorial courses run by Southland Education. We are delighted to be able to show case examples of their work.
This exhibition is going to be an especially exciting, revealing and inspirational event, with lots to see for all ages to enjoy!
