The official death toll in Japan's disastrous earthquake and tsunami has passed 2400.
Police today said 2414 people have been confirmed dead, while 3118 are missing and with 1885 injured.
The official toll yesterday stood at 1647.
However, the police chief of Miyagi, one of the hardest-hit prefectures, said the number of deaths in his region alone could ultimately exceed 10,000.
The increased toll comes after news that radiation is leaking from the Fukushima complex after a third blast hit the plant this morning.
The latest blast happened in the plant's Unit 2 near a suppression pool, which removes heat under a reactor vessel, plant owner Tokyo Electric Power Co. said. No-one was reported injured, but plant workers were temporarily evacuated.
Japanese authorities have been injecting seawater as a coolant of last resort, and advising nearby residents to stay inside to avoid contamination.
