Blazing into the new year

Tar Barrel Men carry torches and flaming barrels through the streets of Allendale in northern England in the annual Tar Barrel festival yesterday. The barrels, carried on the men’s heads, are filled with tar, sawdust, kindling and paraffin and are used to light a bonfire shortly before midnight to mark the new year.
