Where are they now?
FINN BUTCHER
2012: The national under-18 whitewater kayak slalom champion, Butcher also had an Oceania title and placed 21st at the junior world championships against 50 other kayakers. He wanted to design high-performance sports gear.
2022: Butcher is still representing New Zealand in canoe slalom and won a silver medal in the extreme event at last year’s world championship. Although based in Auckland, he spends up to six months a year travelling in Europe. He has a sport and exercise degree from Massey University.
MADELINE DYKES
2012: A keen horse rider, Dykes had also attended the National Youth Drama School and just been awarded a University of Otago Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship. She planned a double degree, majoring in psychology.
2022: A clinical psychologist with Te Whatu Ora/Health NZ southern district, Dykes works mostly with teenagers. The Dunedin woman no longer has horses but says she still loves animals.
