Further aid for flood-ravaged Fiji

Foreign Minister Murray McCully today announced New Zealand would provide a further $750,000 to Fiji's recovery effort following severe flooding.

McCully announced an assistance package worth $500,000 for agencies assisting flood victims earlier this week, but the new contribution would bring New Zealand's total contribution to the flood response to $1.25 million.

"The situation in Fiji is improving as the weather clears but there is still an enormous clean up job ahead and many challenges for the people of Fiji," he said.

The aid package would include payments to New Zealand non-government organisations working with partners in flood affected areas and the rest used to purchase relief supplies requested by Fiji.

The latest reports suggested up to 14,000 people continued to take refuge in evacuation centres with many not knowing if they would be able to return to their homes.

Assessments of the degree of damage were still being carried out.

The aid supplies had been depleted after flooding in Fiji in January - agencies had not fully replenished their supplies.

"New Zealand's funding will be provided to the Fiji Red Cross, and other non-government agencies well positioned to respond,'' said McCully.

New Zealand provided $350,000 to the Fiji Red Cross to support the response to severe floods in January and a further $1.5 million to the Fiji Natural Disaster Management Office and to refurbish evacuation centres.

The level of damage from both floods was still being assessed.
