The seven, aged from 14 to 20, departed Dunedin Airport on Saturday on their way to the Gold Coast in Australia.
They have been selected by the Koru Care Charitable Trust, which chooses young adults with chronic or terminal illnesses or permanent disabilities.
Koru Care Otago president Karena Turnock said for all those selected, it was their first trip overseas.
Registered nurses travelled with the team to ensure any health issues were monitored.
Among the activities planned were visits to Currumbin Wildlife Park, Movie World, Sea World and Dream World.
"This is something that’s pretty much out of their comfort zone.
"It’s about the new experiences and getting the chance for them to meet new people, make friends, and be independent.
"It’s providing them some normality."
Paige Kerr said she was looking forward to going to the theme parks, while Polly Lublow-Catty said she wanted to see the koalas at the wildlife park.
Ms Turnock said the young people would return to New Zealand at the end of this week.
"It’s a bit of a whirlwind, but it’s so worthwhile."
