Woman recants on fake evidence that put man in dock

A Hastings woman has admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice after she misled police over her fiance's killing.

Hastings District Court was told yesterday that Karen Black, 49, gave police fake evidence which led to a High Court trial following the death of her fiance, Shawn Ian Brooking, Hawke's Bay Today reported.

Police found Mr Brooking beaten and unconscious in a Hastings gutter on November 29, 2009. He was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital and later airlifted to Wellington Hospital where he died the next day.

After police interviewed Black, Mr Brooking's uncle Andy Bell was arrested and charged with manslaughter.

His wrongful implication was based on claims made by Black, who had initially said Mr Brooking was struck by a stranger.

After he died, she told police it was Mr Bell who had punched her partner during an argument, a version she repeated at Bell's trial.

He was discharged after Black backtracked on her evidence.

Yesterday she was remanded at large for sentence in April.

Police said last night they were not seeking anyone else in relation to the murder but were still investigating what happened.
