Wedding v sport: who will win?

Today's Royal Wedding could test some marriages around Otago, and even lead to ugly custody battles.

Custody of the television remote control tonight could turn the couch into a battleground in many households, with Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding of the year competing with three big sporting events.

Both TV1 and TV3 are broadcasting five hours of live coverage of the Royal Wedding build-up and Westminster Abbey ceremony, from 7.30pm.

However, the main wedding congregation arrives at the abbey at 7.15pm, just as the Highlanders are tightening their laces for the 7.35pm kick-off against the Blues at Carisbrook.

Also at that time, the history-chasing New Zealand Breakers tip off against the Cairns Taipans in the ANBL championship decider at the North Shore Entertainment Centre and the Otago Nuggets play the Hawks in an NBL match at the Edgar Centre.

The games will be over by the time Prince William and best man Prince Harry arrive at the abbey at 9.15pm and the Highlanders, Breakers and Nuggets results will be history by the time William slips a ring on Kate's finger.

Dunedin had Royal Wedding fever - or at least a mild temperature - yesterday, with customers thronging costume shops.

"It's been crazy. There are so many parties on and everyone's really into it," Pinkalilly's Parties manager Carissa Williamson said.

"We sold about 50 tiaras today and we've ordered another 60 for tomorrow. Union Jacks and bowler hats have also been really popular. This has been huge. Our biggest days of the year are St Patrick's Day and Halloween and this is easily up there with those."

However, Miss Williamson admitted she was still debating the loyalty versus royalty issue herself.

"Between the rugby, the basketball and the wedding, what do you watch?"

Fairies, Wizards and Gifts manager Val Cayford said the wedding appealed to all ages.

"We've had young and old in here getting dressed up for parties. We've sold 40 or 50 flags today and about the same number of tiaras. The demand has really caught me by surprise."

For those who need to escape the five-hour coverage, the Topp Twins will host an evening of fish-filleting, duck-calling and deer-roaring in The Bloke's Bash at the Balclutha Memorial Hall.

Wanaka is in stand-off, with the Lonestar holding a Kate and Wills party, while the Bullock Bar has pledged a wedding-free zone and uninterrupted coverage of the Highlanders-Blues match.

Iona Home, in Oamaru, will display the wedding dresses of residents and Ranfurly is holding a Royal Wedding party at the Maniototo Rugby Club rooms.

"I think it'll be a bit of a ladies' night," organiser Lucia Dowling said.

The Ripponburn Rest Home in Cromwell and Ranui Rest Home in Alexandra will have a high tea for residents, while the Chalet Rest Home toasted the Royal couple during yesterday's happy hour.

"The event's on a bit late for most of our residents, so we'll be taping it so they can watch it the next day," manager Sarah Godsiff said.
