Two charged with attempted murder after shootings

Two men have been charged with attempted murder following a shooting yesterday stemming from a feud between two families.

The men allegedly fired shots from a car hitting two people in another car about 9.30am on Daniel St at Kaingaroa, 50km southeast of Rotorua, police said.

A 20-year-old and a 16-year-old would appear in Taupo Youth Court today facing a charge of attempted murder and various firearms charges, Inspector Greg Sparrow said.

Edwin Iraia, 21, was shot in the hand and Harmon MacPherson, 19, was shot in the shoulder.

Mr MacPherson had been released from hospital and Mr Iraia had been transferred to Waikato Hospital, Mr Sparrow said.

A third man initially thought to have been stabbed, may have been accidentally injured and charges had not been laid over that, he told NZPA. The shooting involved two families and police were trying to get the bottom of the reasons behind it, he said.

"We've recovered a firearm that we believe was used in the shooting and our current focus at present is speaking to witnesses and examining the vehicles that were used in the incident."

Police would be having a high profile presence in Kaingaroa and Murupara, 65km southeast of Rotorua, for the foreseeable future, Mr Sparrow said.

Another incident in the area a couple of months ago was not thought to be connected to yesterday's shooting at this stage, Mr Sparrow said.

In May a rifle was allegedly fired at a Daniel St house and a man allegedly attacked another with a Maori war club.
