Trial of murder accused (15) aborted after attack

A High Court trial for a Tokoroa teenager accused of killing a 22-year-old has been aborted after the mother of the victim tried to attack him in court.

The trial of the 15-year-old, who can not be named for legal reasons, began in the High Court at Rotorua before Justice Patrick Keane this week.

Tokoroa detective Brett Watene said the mother of the victim flew at the teen from the public gallery, during the trail on Thursday, as a police officer read his statement out in court.

Two court security officers held her back and Justice Keane stopped the trial shortly after.

The teenager is accused of murdering Shayne Pita Walker, also known as Shayne Pita Stark, at Tokoroa on January 26 last year.

A woman walking home about 2am found Mr Walker lying on the corner of St Andrews Dr and Fife St in Tokoroa with a stab wound in his chest. He died shortly after arriving at Tokoroa Hospital.

A post mortem found Mr Walker had died from a single stab wound to the chest.

Meanwhile, Justice Keane has remanded the boy in Child Youth and Family care to reappear in the High Court at Rotorua on April 2, for a callover so a new trial date can be set.
