Police have warned of delays on State Highway 1 just north of Wellington.
Traffic heading north through the Paremata-Plimmerton area is extremely heavy, a police spokesman said this afternoon.
"This is not due to any accident, just sheer numbers heading up the island."
Police advised motorists to either delay departure or be prepared for considerable delays going through that area.
