Temuka men remanded over bird killings

Three men accused of slaughtering 32 birds at an aviary were further remanded on bail after they appeared in Timaru District Court today.

Simiona Paul John, 27, Jonathan Ramon Douglas Fleming, 22, and Luke Michael Kirkcaldie, 21, all of Temuka, entered no plea, and will return to court on September 15.

The trio are jointly accused of breaking into the Temuka Aviary and wilfully ill-treating the birds causing them to die, The Timaru Herald reported.

Many of the birds were decapitated and feathers ripped from their bodies during the attack last week. Their remains were then scattered.
