A man charged with historic sex offences has been jailed for five years and four months.
Gavin James Biggs, 55, freezing worker, of Temuka appeared today in the High Court at Timaru before Justice Chisholm for sentencing on 14 counts of sexual offending.
The charges included one of rape, one of attempted rape, nine charges of indecent assault, one charge of doing an indecent act, and two charges of inducing a girl to do an indecent act.
They related to two different complainants, with the offences taking place in various locations around South Canterbury, over a period of four years from 1979.
The victims were then aged 10 to 13, and 9 to 11. Biggs was aged between 26 and 30.
Biggs was sentenced to five years and four months imprisonment for rape. For the attempted rape he was sentenced to two and half years and on the other charges 18 months each.
All sentences are to be served concurrently.
