Teen removed electronic tag to reoffend

A 17-year-old on home detention for a raft of convictions removed his electronic alarm bracelet to go out and commit further offences, Tauranga District Court was told today.

Axel Harrison, unemployed, pleaded guilty to breaching home detention, escaping custody, dangerous driving, failing to stop and burglary.

Harrison today accepted that he would be going to jail and asked to be dealt with this week so he could be free by the time his partner had their baby in August.

But Judge Thomas Ingram, promising no more home detention and a "good long sentence" behind bars, remanded Harrison in custody until March 11 for a pre-sentence report.

The court was told that Harrison was picked up by police at another address after removing his bracelet.

But while the teenager was entering Tauranga police station charge room, he escaped, running off through a car park behind the building, jumping fences as he fled.

Officers did not find him until four days later.

Prosecutor, Sergeant Mark Graham said about 11.55pm on January 16, Harrison's car failed to stop when followed by a police car with red and blue flashing lights.

Driving west on Welcome Bay Road in Tauranga, he was clocked at 80kmh in a 50kmh zone.

Harrison crossed the centre line to pass two cars in front before turning south onto State Highway 29 at 140kmh, overtaking another two vehicles.

He drove over police road spikes, deflating three tyres and continuing to drive on the wheel rims.

When apprehended, Harrison said: "I have been making some bad decisions lately".
