Speed, no helmet factors in motorcyclist's death

A 20-year-old motorcyclist who was not wearing a helmet died when he hit a van he was overtaking.

Aaron Nigel Rudkin crashed into the van as it turned right into a service station on Jellicoe Rd at Ruawai, south of Whangarei, about 6pm yesterday.

Both Mr Rudkin and the van were headed south when the collision happened.

"The motorcyclist has attempted to overtake the van while it was turning," police said.

"Speed is believed to be a contributing factor [and] the motorcyclist was also not wearing a safety helmet at the time of the collision."

Mr Rudkin, from Ruawai, was pronounced dead at the scene.
