Skipper charged after fishing boat sinks

The skipper of a fishing boat, which ran aground in the Far North last March and later sank, is due in Kaitaia District Court tomorrow.

The man faces a charge of operating a fishing vessel without the proper documentation after an investigation by Maritime New Zealand into the sinking of the 100-tonne Seawyf.

The boat grounded on the Fairway Reef in Doubtless Bay early in March but several weeks later washed off into deeper water and broke up.

Diesel and other lubricants which could have contaminated the area were removed before it disappeared.
