Six inmates charged after attacks

Police have wound up their investigation into an outbreak of violence at Auckland's maximum-security Paremoremo prison earlier this month with six men facing assault charges.

Four inmates were seriously injured in attacks on August 6 with two requiring treatment at North Shore Hospital. Police spokesman Kevin Loughlin said the victims had since recovered from their injuries.

Police found several makeshift weapons immediately after the attacks and the Department of Corrections confirmed at least one had been used.

Two men, aged 38 and 20, will be jointly charged with assaulting three inmates with intent to injure.

Four more men, aged between 21 and 27, face the same charge for an attack on one other inmate.

Mr Loughlin said no further details could be released as the case was before the courts.

No date for their court appearance has been set but it was expected to be within the next two weeks.

A number of prison attacks have made headlines recently and the prison workers' union has called for increased protection for guards as it claims prisoners have become better armed than those charged with looking after them.

On July 27 a prisoner at Upper Hutt's Rimutaka Prison was left in critical condition after a fellow inmate attacked him with a pool cue.

The incident came less than three weeks after a guard at the same prison suffered multiple skull fractures and faced losing sight in one eye after a being assaulted with a broom.

Paremoremo Prison has had its share of assaults.

On July 19 a guard was reportedly stabbed in the head and neck.

The most high-profile incident was the stabbing of RSA triple murderer William Bell in December last year. Bell was stabbed in the head and eye socket while in the prison's recreation room.
