Three days after the official holiday road toll period ended police are continuing to release details about the 24 deaths.
Today they named two people killed on January 1.
Motorcyclist Godfrey Hislop, 89, of Kaikoura, had recently returned to riding a motorbike when he was killed on Inland Rd, 20km from the State Highway 1 turnoff, near Kaikoura.
Mr Hislop cycled the length of New Zealand when he was 70.
But he returned to motorbikes when he saw his black Suzuki 250cc bike in Blenheim one day, The Kaikoura Star reported.
Acting Sergeant Dean Schroder said they were investigating the crash that killed Mr Hislop.
Police expected charges would be laid, he said.
Police also named Aaron Marshall, 33, from Wellington, who was discovered by family after he failed to show at a Wanganui address as planned.
His body was found 30km up Whanganui River Road and Mr Marshall was the sole occupant in the single vehicle crash.
Constable Nick Brunger, of Wanganui, said it appeared the accident was due to driver fatigue.
The police investigation is continuing and police would like to hear from anyone with information.
The provisional Christmas/New Year road toll is 24 - six more than the previous year.
The period runs from 4pm on Christmas Eve to 6am January 5.
