Crash answers sought

The woman killed in a Christmas Eve car crash in Mosgiel knew the driver of a car she was understood to have been following at the time of the crash, Dunedin police said yesterday.

Police yesterday released the name of the driver killed.

She was Gayle Jean Anderson (44), of Mosgiel.

Ms Anderson, also known as Jones, was the only occupant of a Honda Prelude which crashed into a power pole on a straight piece of Bush Rd about 9.30pm.

Detective Sergeant Brett Roberts, of Dunedin, said yesterday police now wanted to hear from any witnesses who may have seen the two vehicles, a silver 1992 Honda Prelude and a dark blue 2001 Subaru Impreza, between 4pm and 10pm on Friday.

The cars may have appeared to have been "racing or chasing", Det Sgt Roberts said, although not necessarily at high speed, on School Rd in south Mosgiel, on the Mosgiel-Outram highway, Riccarton Rd and Bush Rd.

Police were initially searching for the occupants of a blue vehicle with a big bore exhaust, but yesterday Det Sgt Roberts said the male driver of that car had since been spoken to.

Ms Anderson was understood to have been following that car, and knew the driver, although was not related to him.

Det Sgt Roberts said he was keen to hear from members of the public who had witnessed the vehicles on the day.
