Remand for man charged with lifting child by head

A 20-year-old charged with lifting a child by the head - an action allegedly caught on a bus-stop surveillance camera - has signalled he is taking the case to a trial before a judge-alone.

Terrence Matthew Rangianoa Biddle, an unemployed Linwood man, had the case sent to a status hearing on May 5 when he appeared on remand before Judge David Holderness in Christchurch District Court today, the Christchurch Court News website reported.

A status hearing usually precedes a fixture before a District Court judge.

Police have charged Biddle with wilful ill-treatment of a five-year-old child in a manner likely to cause injury.

The incident was caught on film at a bus stop in Shirley on January 28.
