A New Plymouth recycling centre where worker Ben Hekenui had his legs amputated in a baler last year has admitted two charges relating to the accident.
LCG Ltd, which trades as Taranaki Recyclers, pleaded guilty in New Plymouth District Court today to failing to take all practicable steps to protect employees and failing to ensure systematic hazard identification.
The charges were laid under the Health and Safety in Employment Act.
Mr Hekenui lost one leg above the knee and the other below the knee when he fell into the baler while trying to clear a blockage.
The court was told that since the accident additional guards and safety measures had been installed on the baler.
The company faces fines up to $500,000 when it is sentenced on March 11.
