An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale has rocked the central North Island this afternoon.
GNS Science said the quake struck at 12.46pm and was centred 40km east of Turangi, south of Lake Taupo, at a depth of 60km.
It was felt widely in the central North Island and Hawke's Bay.
