A man who allegedly smiled as he told a bank teller he had a bomb and to hand over money will see a psychiatric nurse, a court was told today.
Tim Whelan, 22, has been charged with the robbery of the ANZ bank in Woolston, in Christchurch, last week.
Police say he is the smirking man caught on security cameras making no effort to conceal his face as he held-up a female teller of cash while armed with a device that appeared to be a bomb and detonator on September 24.
Whelan, unemployed of Parklands, appeared from custody today at Christchurch District Court.
His lawyer Michael Starling said a nurse would carry out a screening test on him later today, which will determine whether he'll seek a psychiatric report when the case is heard again next week.
No bail application was made and Judge Paul Kellar remanded Whelan in custody without plea.
