A 21-year-old man appeared in court today charged with the murder of an Asian businesswoman who was struck down by a vehicle at a south Auckland mall last week.
The victim, Joanne Wang, 39, died on June 17, the day after she was knocked down by a 4WD in a car park as she tried to stop a man who had snatched her handbag.
At Manukau District Court, the man charged with her murder had his name suppressed and was remanded in custody to reappear on July 7.
His arrest was the fifth in the case, with three others having been charged in relation to the disposal of the stolen 4WD and another over the theft of the handbag.
Inquiry head Detective Inspector John Tims said this morning that the latest arrest was made last night.
He said police were still looking for a Maori man who was the driver of a red car that was hit by the 4WD and who witnessed Mrs Wang being knock down.
