Murder charge laid after body found in Auckland

A man was today charged with the murder of a 48-year-old woman whose body was found in the Auckland suburb of Western Springs two weeks ago.

The 47-year-old computer programmer was originally charged with assault.

However, that count was withdrawn when he reappeared in Auckland District Court this morning, and replaced with one of murder.

He was granted continued interim name suppression until a pre-depositions hearing on June 17.

Both police and defence counsel had sought continued name suppression while psychiatric reports were being completed.

Interim suppression of the victim's identity was also continued.

The woman's body was found about 5pm on May 12 at an address in Warwick Street in the suburb of Western Springs, west of the city centre.

Police have said the woman appeared to have been dead for some weeks when her body was found.
