A man has died after a motorcycle crash near Wanganui this morning.
Police were at the scene about 17km west of Wanganui between Kai Iwi and Maxwell.
Whanganui Police Sergeant Andy Reid said police were alerted to the accident about 6.30am by the driver of a passing car.
The serious crash unit was still investigating the cause of the crash, but it appeared the 41-year-old man had left the road as he was travelling north, crashing into an advertising sign then through an eight-wire fence.
He was thrown from the bike and landed several metres away in a newly plowed paddock.
It did not appear any other vehicles were involved in the crash.
It occurred on a straight stretch of road just past the end of a passing lane.
Two ambulances and a fire engine also attended the scene, but the man was dead before they arrived.
By 9.30am, the man's family had been alerted and were sitting with his body while they waited for the funeral directors.
