Mother to stand trial over son's death

A Wairarapa woman has been committed for trial for the manslaughter of her four-year-old son, killed in a car crash last year.

At Masterton District Court this week Wendy-May Connon's lawyer Jock Blathwayt conceded there was a case to answer, the Wairarapa Times Age newspaper reported.

Connon, from Featherston, who appeared in court on crutches, was remanded on bail to appear in Wellington High Court on February 23, to set a trial date.

Evidence from a police serious crash unit report about speed was "sufficient to commit my client to trial", Mr Blathwayt said.

Connon's son Konrad was killed when she crashed her car at high speed in Kahutara, south of Featherston, in January 2008.

Connon also faces a charge of dangerous driving causing injury relating to Konrad's brother and sister, aged six and 11 respectively, who were hurt in the crash.

Connon's bail conditions included not to drive or associate with witnesses, or to consume alcohol or drugs.
