More charges for double murder accused

The man accused of a double murder in an inner-city Auckland apartment block last month faced three more charges when he appeared in Auckland District Court today.

Baseem Ridha Kadhim Abbad Al-Amery, 30, an Iraqi immigrant of no fixed abode, was previously charged with two murders and one of aggravated burglary after he was arrested following a 2-1/2-hour stand-off with armed police.

Today he also faced charges of assaulting a female, threatening to kill and possession of a knife.

Police found the bodies of David Roberts, from Wales, and Deni Rudiantonio, from Indonesia, with multiple stab wounds in a room on the ground floor of the Alpha Apartments, in Vogel Lane, on July 19.

The names of Mr Roberts and Mr Rudiantonio had been suppressed until today's court hearing so police could contact their families.

Al-Amery was remanded in custody for a depositions hearing on October 14.
