Man sent to trial for sex attack on girl

A name suppression clamp has come back down on a man accused of a sex attack on a 15-year-old schoolgirl in the grounds of a Christchurch school.

The man's name was published when the interim order was not continued at an appearance in September, but reinstated at his depositions hearing today at the request of the crown.

The reason for the interim order being sought cannot be published.

The man, 41, is charged with detaining the girl without her consent with intent to have sex with her, injuring her with reckless disregard for her safety, and sexually violating her by unlawful sexual connection.

Police alleged the attack happened in primary school grounds on September 2 last year.

Crown prosecutor Kerryn Beaton said the crown would call evidence from 26 witnesses at the trial, but none gave evidence in person at the depositions hearing before Judge Jackie Moran in Christchurch District Court today.

The man was committed for trial and remanded on custody to appear at a pre-trial conference in the High Court on March 6.
