Man in motorway hijack remanded

The man at the centre of the Auckland motorway fatal shooting that left an innocent man dead has been remanded in custody to reappear again in March.

Stephen Hohepa McDonald, 50, who appeared in Auckland District Court today, faces numerous charges over the police pursuit, theft of vehicles and firearms offences.

Police confirmed early this week McDonald would face new charges related to offences police allege occurred before the northwestern motorway drama in which Halatau Naitoko was shot dead by police on January 23.

The 17-year-old courier driver died from a bullet to the chest after being caught in crossfire as McDonald allegedly tried to hijack a truck.

A woman police say was an accomplice of McDonald in the lead-up to the fatal shooting admitted five charges yesterday.

Margaret Patricia Iris Mann, 19, pleaded guilty to the charges when she appeared in Waitakere District Court.

Three of the charges - unlawfully getting into a stolen vehicle, failing to stop for police and driving while forbidden - related to events on January 23 when she allegedly acted as an accomplice of McDonald.

Two charges she admitted - another of driving while forbidden and one of giving false details - related to earlier events.

Mann was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Waitakere District Court on April 24.
