A man who lashed out at a group of party-goers with a metal bar in Wellington has been jailed for 12 months.
Daniel John Lawson, 21, was charged with two counts of assault after taking the metal bar with him on a night out in November last year. He pleaded guilty in Wellington District Court.
The court was told Lawson threatened two students with the weapon, and later the same night swung it at a group of people at a party, hitting three of them.
Judge Peter Butler said that although no one was injured, purposely taking the metal bar with him made Lawson's offending more serious.
The judge also said that Lawson's alcohol problem, and the fact he committed the assaults while on parole, made him at high risk of reoffending.
