A 28-year-old New Plymouth man has been arrested over the vicious beating of a Taranaki taxi driver almost two weeks ago.
Tony Brosnan, 49, was beaten and left locked in the boot of his taxi, with severe head injuries.
The Waitara father of two was found in a carport on school grounds at Urenui, 30km northeast of New Plymouth, 12 days ago.
The beating put him in a coma he only emerged from at the end of last week. He remains in hospital in a stable condition.
Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Coward tonight told NZPA police had arrested the man in Auckland and he had appeared in North Shore District Court today charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, aggravated robbery and kidnapping.
He was remanded in custody.
Mr Coward said he had informed Mr Brosnan, who was still recovering from his injuries, of the arrest.
"He's still pretty sick, but he could acknowledge that the arrest had been made so that's pretty good."
At this stage Mr Coward could not rule out others being involved in the attack.
He said there was still a lot of work to do for police working on the case, sifting through the large amount of information and evidence they had accumulated during their investigation.
