Man charged with aggravated robbery

A 24-year-old man appeared in Manukau District Court today charged with aggravated robbery of a south Auckland supermarket, after shoppers made a citizens arrest.

Police were on the scene at the New World Supermarket in Clendon within three minutes of the alarm being raised yesterday but shoppers had already detained the man, who was allegedly armed with a sawn-off rifle.

The Manukau man did not make a plea and police opposed bail.

He was remanded in custody until February 9, when he will reappear in Manukau District Court.
