Man arrested over Palmerston North dairy hold-up

Police have made an arrest over the gunpoint robbery of a Palmerston North dairy at the weekend.

Police said four masked men burst into the Gloriana Dairy in the suburb of Highbury about 7.40pm on Sunday.

One of the men threatened the male and female shop owners, and an elderly woman who came into the shop, with a long-barrelled firearm.

They stole the cash register and a quantity of tobacco before fleeing and eluding a police cordon.

Police today said they had arrested a 19-year-old local man and charged him with aggravated robbery.

They will oppose bail when he appears in Palmerston North District Court today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said police were pursuing positive lines of inquiry to track down the other offenders.

Police were trying to identify the offenders by going through security camera footage. They may have been in their mid- to late-teens.

Six search warrants have been executed during the investigation.

The firearm and stolen property had not been recovered.

The investigation had so far relied on the assistance of the community, Mr Sheridan said.

"I am encouraged by the number of people who have come forward offering information. It is clear the community has no tolerance for this type of violent crime."
