"I thought if anyone was going to break in and steal something, they would go for a lady's knickers drawer first as men's undies are just not as appealing," the happy Bay of Islands woman said.

The couple bought their ticket at Paihia Four Square for the Lotto draw on the January 15.

"I still can't believe that we've won. When my husband read me the winning Lotto numbers, I threw the ticket into the bin, as I thought he was joking," she said

"Thank goodness I fished it out and checked again."

After a quick phone call to a family member to confirm the winning numbers, the winning couple hopped on a plane to Wellington to receive their winnings in person at the NZ Lotteries Commission.

"When we got to Wellington, we had to call 018 to get directions to the Lotteries Commission. It definitely didn't help with the nerves," the woman said.

The couple plan on investing their winnings and paying off their mortgage.
