Kiwis stay in Libya despite warnings to go

A number of New Zealanders have chosen to remain in Libya as violent protests continue against the Government.

Rebel forces have taken control of most of Libya's capital Tripoli, surging through about 30km in a matter of hours.

Prime Minister John Key confirmed today that seven New Zealanders had stayed in the country despite Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade warnings to leave.

Those people remained in contact with the New Zealand Embassy in Cairo.

Mr Key said New Zealand was watching the unfolding events in Libya with concern, but also hope.

"Rebel Libyan forces seem very close to taking the city of Tripoli and toppling the Gaddafi regime," he said.

"It seems to us two options available for (Muammar) Gaddafi, he can choose to stay in Tripoli and fight till the end, resulting in further unnecessary bloodshed, or he can acknowledge the legitimate demands of the majority of Libyans and leave the country."

Mr Key said New Zealand's ambassador in Cairo would go to Benghazi to establish a working relationship with the Transitional National Council.

"New Zealand has consistently supported UN and Nato action aimed at protecting innocent Libyans from Gaddafi's stated intention of severely punishing all those who have opposed him."
