Icy Central Otago roads treacherous

Sheet ice and frozen snow are making conditions treacherous for Central Otago motorists today.

School bus runs in the Maniototo and Alexandra and Clyde have been delayed by several hours.

Danseys Pass remains closed because of snow and ice and the Poolburn hill was closed because of ice but has now reopened.

A light coating of snow, which fell throughout the Maniototo and parts of Central Otago overnight, has frozen this morning.

In south Otago motorists have been advised to take care because of isolated areas of black ice.

The Fire Service is warning of black ice in other areas of the South Island, while heavy rain is expected in the north of the island this morning.

MetService is forecasting heavy rain about the northwest Nelson Ranges this morning, easing this afternoon.

In the 10 hours from 7am, 60-80mm is expected, with the heaviest falls later this morning.
