HIV-positive man to face further charges

A 40-year-old HIV-positive man accused of infecting several people with the virus will face eight further charges when he reappears in Auckland District Court today.

The man, who has interim name suppression, currently faces charges of infecting three males, as well as attempting to infect a fourth.

Police said eight new charges would be laid today, six of wounding or attempted wounding with reckless disregard, one of infecting with a disease, and one of attempted infecting with disease.

Auckland poice communications manager Noreen Hegarty said the man was diagnosed HIV positive in May 2007 and had allegedly had an active sex life with men and women since.

In total, the charges he faces relate to six people, four of whom are HIV positive.

She alleged the man the man, who profiled himself as a 32-year-old on various website and telephone dating services, attempted to solicit partners throughout the country and possibly overseas.
