The drivers of two vehicles that crashed head-on last night have died and a third person is in a critical condition in hospital.
The two male drivers of a Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon crashed on State Highway 1 near the intersection of Mokena Kohere St at Manakau, south of Levin, about 10.40pm.
Inspector Ken Climo said one of the sedans rolled and one person was trapped.
A woman who was the passenger in the Holden was rushed to Palmerston North Hospital in a serious condition.
Mr Climo said she had suffered "quite serious injuries".
The serious crash unit is investigating. It is not believed the road was wet at the time of the crash, Mr Climo said.
Police have not revealed the ages of the two drivers or where they are from while family members are still being contacted.
Sergeant Matiu Grant, of the Levin Police, said initial investigations suggested one of the vehicles crossed the centre line before colliding with the oncoming car.
"Police are currently working through the process of notifying next of kin," Mr Grant said.
He appealed for anyone with information about the crash to contact Levin Police on 06 366 0500.
