Fake drug deal ends in four years' jail

A Wanganui man has been jailed for four years after arranging a fake drug deal which ended in the brutal beating and BB gun shooting of another man.

Turaahui Wiari, 30, appeared in Wanganui District Court this week and was sentenced to four years' jail, ordered to pay reparation of $750 for an aggravated robbery causing grievous bodily harm, with a further 18 months' jail for the supply and sale of cannabis and methamphetamine.

In November last year Wiari arranged to meet another man and buy about 285g of cannabis for $1600, the Wanganui Chronicle reported.

As the victim walked down Bedford Ave in Gonville, two men with aluminium baseball bats emerged from the bushes.

They and Wiari chased him, and beat him repeatedly on the body, arms, legs and torso.

He was also shot in the back, arm and at least three times in the back of the head by a compressed-air powered BB gun. The attackers stole his wallet and backpack before fleeing.

Three ball-bearing bullets were lodged in the victim's head. In his victim impact statement he said one was removed, but he did not want to go through the pain of having the others taken out.
