A Whangarei doctor is $900 out of pocket after falling for a Rugby World Cup scam.
Murray Pachel attempted to buy tickets to the Rugby World Cup pool games in Whangarei off a site advertising them, Worldcup2011.com.
TV3 News reported tonight that Dr Pachel put in his credit card details, paying $900, last year but yesterday was knocked back when he tried to pick the tickets up from an official outlet.
"The guy said to me, 'Where did you get the tickets from?' I said worldcup2011.com, because I looked back on the information I had and he said, 'Oh, that's a fraudulent site. You don't have any tickets'," Dr Pachel said.
TV3 News said when it googled Euroteam, the company behind the website, there were pages of complaints from people being scammed and left without tickets and money.
The organisers of the tournament said that plenty of scams would go undetected and it was a case of buyer beware.
