Decision reserved on transferral of Ruatoki raids to High Court

A High Court judge has reserved her decision on whether charges laid after controversial police raids in Ruatoki in the eastern Bay of Plenty in 2007 should be transferred to the High Court.

The Crown sought to have the hearing transferred from the District Court to the High Court, and today Judge Patricia Winkelmann reserved her decision and also ordered that none of the reasons for the application be published.

Police initially intended to charge some of the 19 people arrested under the Terrorism Suppression Act, but the Solicitor-General ruled against that and the suspects now face firearms and drugs charges under the Arms Act.

Judge Winkelmann said her ruling should be made by the end of the week.
