Daken bail bid refused

A bid for release on bail for Patrick Allan Daken, accused of murdering his brother in an incident at Port Levy in June, has been refused.

The bail appeal was heard by Justice Lester Chisholm in an almost three-hour sitting in the High Court at Christchurch today, Christchurch Court News website reported.

Counsel for Daken, Tony Garrett and Andrew McKenzie, made the application which was opposed by crown prosecutor Mark Zarifeh.

Justice Chisholm refused to grant bail and suppressed all details of the application.

Daken is accused of murdering Kelly Paul Daken at Port Levy on June 10. The crown says the dead man was stabbed in the chest during an altercation at the family's home on Banks Peninsula.

Daken's depositions hearing was held last month, and he is now awaiting trial in the High Court. He is next due to appear for a pre-trial conference on February 13, for a possible trial in August.

The trial is expected to last a week.
