Council seeking feedback on drinking ban

Wellington City Council is seeking feedback on plans for a city-wide public drinking ban.

Drinking or carrying liquor in public is already banned in the central business district, Oriental Bay, Mount Victoria lookout, Aro Valley and Central Park.

Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast today said public feedback would help the council decide if a wider ban was necessary.

Residents in a number of suburbs had reported alcohol-related problems including litter, intimidating behaviour and property damage, she said.

"At present the council has no way to tackle the abuse of alcohol in public places outside the current bylaw area," she said.

"There's no doubt that the current bylaw has proved to be a valuable tool for police. It gives them a measure of control because they can ask people who are drinking to dispose of their liquor, or give them a warning."
