A review of the city's alcohol policy had been talked about for years, but had been delayed while governments decided what they were doing about alcohol reform, council liquor licensing and projects officer Kevin Mechen said.
The Alcohol Reform Bill is due to be finalised in about 10 weeks, but at a Dunedin City Council hearing on extending the CBD liquor ban last week there was a clear direction from the community that something needed to done about alcohol access and supply as soon as possible, he said.
Without supplying the complete details, which would go to the council's planning and environment committee in July and then for public consultation, he said he would do some pre-consultation with key parties concerning such things as opening hours, liquor licences for service areas on footpaths and restricting special licences.
Those were areas where there was already some direction from a national level.
When the legislation was finalised, the council could revisit other parts of the policy, and look at what else it could do to bring Dunedin's policy into line with the legislation.
"I think we've just got to get some runs on the board in the meantime," Mr Mechen said.
