Community work for woman who slapped cops

A woman who crashed into two vehicles and then later slapped two police officers has been sentenced to community work and disqualified from driving.

Napier woman Ashley Jonette Macaskill, 46, who denied the offences, claimed she could not remember the events surrounding her misadventures at the wheel of a Mitsubishi Mirage in Lever St, Ahuriri, about 5.40pm on October 15 last year.

She also claimed they weren't caused by alcohol, Hawke's Bay Today reported.

Last month she was found guilty after a defended hearing and appeared before Judge Tony Adeane in Napier District Court yesterday for sentence.

Judge Adeane said it was the smell of alcohol on her breath which alerted the police officers in the first place.

According to police the car Macaskill was driving veered across the road outside Port Ahuriri School, swiped a Mazda Capella station wagon and then hit the right rear of a Mitsubishi Outlander.

When police arrived Macaskill ignored requests to undergo breath testing, demanded a cigarette and sat in her vehicle refusing to get out.

The police summary said she was arrested and taken to the Napier police station, where she hit a senior constable with an open hand across the left side of his face as he tried to arrange for her to speak with a lawyer.

When her demands for a cigarette from another constable were declined, she slapped him across the right side of his face.

As well as 100 hours' community work, nine months' disqualification from driving and nine months' supervision, Macaskill was ordered to pay $3585 reparation, which included the station wagon being written off.
